Take a Time-out

If you or your partner recognizes any of the signs that your fighting has become unhealthy, the healthy response is to choose to take a Time Out. According to Foote, there are three important rules for Time Outs to be successful:

  • If either partner calls for a Time Out, it is non-negotiable and you both must stop the arguing process immediately.
  • Whoever calls Time Out must bring the issue back to the table within 24 to 48 hours.
  • During Time Out, it is your responsibility to release the emotional intensity within you that is keeping the issue charged.
